Canadian musician, producer and singer  Paul Laine hit the ground running with the release of his debut album, ‘Stick It In Your Ear’, delivering a perfect set of 13 songs of absolute classic melodic rock.

As a debut record Laine really set the bar high for himself on future releases, and it has not deterred him one bit as he has released excellent albums time and time again, always proving that he is a force to be reckoned with in the melodic rock industry.

Mostly widely known for his 11 year stent with New York hair metal outfit Danger Danger from 1993 to 2004 and releasing four albums with the band and one live album. Laine has also released two superb solo albums. One album, with two other incredible artists, André Andersen (Royal Hunt) and David Readman (Pink Cream 69) under the name Andersen/Laine/Readman. One album with his band Shugaazer and one fantastic record with his current country infused melodic rock band Darkhorse. His most recent work is the phenomenal album with supergroup The Defiants featuring Laine’s ex-bandmate from D2Bruno Ravel (See my review of the album here).

What greets us with this record is fantastic musicianship, inspired songwriting and some superb vocals from Laine. The songs are catchy as hell, just click on the link above and hear the incredible ‘Dorianna’ and see if that isn’t true.

From songs like ‘Dorianna’ and the excellent ballad ‘I’ll Be There’ the disc really showcase the set of pipes this guy has as both songs feature some outstanding vocal deliveries. Then we have some fantastic rockers like ‘One Step Over The Line’ and one of my personal favorites of Laine’s, the groovy, bluesy rock feel of ‘Doin Time’ to the Bon Joviesque ‘My Hometown’.

The music contained on his solo albums is not in the same vein as what he did with D2 so if you have only heard his work with them do not expect the same here. This is much more on the side of an 80’s record with some definite nods to hair metal.

Rockers, ballads, fantastic melodies, big hooks and great songwriting make this one hell of a great album that should be in every record collection of fans of melodic rock and hair metal. Highly recommended.

  1. That is an awesome song. I am going to have to find this CD. I will admit I knew he was with Danger Danger but I never knew he had solo CDs. If your review is any indication and that song is then it will be a great one.
