A new release from Calfornian rocker Johnny Lima is like a visit from an old friend, fun, familiar and full of good times. I have loved every single release this man has given us thus far and, though I am not a huge fan of acoustic albums, this one proved to be no different.
Full of Lima’s trademark style of highly infectious melodies, superb musicianship and some of the best vocals you are likely to hear, ‘Unplug ‘N Play’ proves once and for all that Johnny Lima is a force to be reckoned with in the music world.
As I stated previously, I am not a big fan of acoustic albums. Not that I don’t appreciate them and the pure, raw talent it takes to make one, I just feel they tend to get a bit boring after a while. Well let me tell you, this is one very big exception to that way of thinking. Johnny deftly delivers ten superior acoustic tracks that are far above most anything else being released even with a full band.
Starting things off in grand fashion is a track that begs for a screaming guitar and full band behind it. ‘So Excited’ is a song that is pure Lima and gets this album started off right.
‘Still Doing Nothing At All’ is a beautiful ballad and one of my favorite tracks from the record. ‘I Do’ is another beautiful ballad with an excellent vocal from Lima. Both of these songs sit nicely alongside Johnny’s best ballads, and he has given us some fantastic ones in his career.
The next pop rocker, ‘Hallelujah (What’s It To Ya?)’, is another track that would sound excellent with a band behind it. Great lyrics and a fun melody makes this a great track.
‘Feel What It’s Like To Be Loved’ is a terrific mid-tempo track that is one of the best tracks of the album.
‘Superman’ is another excellent rocker that is pure Lima and it leads us into ‘I’m On My Way’ which slows it down again for a great little ballad.
Continuing on with another ballad, we have yet another fantastic track in ‘Nothing’s Worth Losing You’ before we head back into pop rock territory with the fun, lyrically uplifting ‘Let It Shine’.
Closing out the record is your token sleazy song we always have in a Johnny Lima record. A fun, good times rock ‘n’ roller of a song and a fantastic end to an outstanding album.
It would appear that this man can do no wrong as he delivers yet another perfect record, Lima continues his streak of giving us some of the best melodic rock music being put out.
While I can’t help but think about how these songs would sound with a full band backing them, there is no denying that Johnny did a superb job here and even acoustic and stripped down these songs are absolutely stellar from beginning to end with not a bad track in the lot.
Like all of his music we are given terrific, catchy as hell songs with incredible vocals and some outstanding guitar work. The only negative thing I have to say about this record is that it is too short. Everything else is above reproach.
As with other incredible artists such as Dion Bayman, Johnny is so full of talent it is ridiculous. Playing every instrument on the album (except where noted at the top of the page), producing it, mixing it and engineering it himself, the guy is simply a remarkable artist, no two ways about it. And as I have said many times, these guys are criminally underrated artists and should be outselling the hell out of the crap that pervades our radio stations.
Like with every album this man puts out, this record is very highly recommended. You cannot go wrong with a Johnny Lima album. Click on the link below to visit his website and help support this phenomenal artist.
