Anyone that knows melodic metal knows the name Jorn Lande, a name that is synonymous with the genre, having been in bands such as Masterplan, Ark, Millenium, Allen/Lande and is a staple in Tobias Sammet’s outstanding metal opera, Avantasia, just to name a few of the projects this powerhouse vocalist has been involved with. His name is most definitely not an unfamiliar one to us.
Nor is his voice. Possessing one of the most magnificent and recognizable voices in rock music, the man never delivers anything less than a perfect vocal in all that he does, and this new album is no different.
A very busy man, releasing new material pretty much every year, plus multiple guest vocals, Jorn brings us another covers album here mid-way through the 2016 year. Not a stranger to doing covers by any means as he has released many fine cover songs and albums over the course of his career plus the excellent 2010 Ronnie James Dio tribute covers album, ‘Dio’, but Jorn gives us his best one yet with ‘Heavy Rock Radio’.
Now I will admit, when I first saw the track listing for this record I was very skeptical. How many metal singers do you know that will cover the likes of Kate Bush and Frida. Well Jorn does it here and any skepticism I had prior to hearing the record was erased immediately upon hearing this powerhouse vocalist’s renditions.
Not only does he cover these hits but he sounds utterly fantastic doing it. Any metal singer that can sing, and make it work for him, something like the aforementioned ‘I Know There’s Something Going On’ from Frida (Abba’s Anni-Frid Lyngstad) is a true talent indeed. And not that we needed any more proof, but this album is further testament to the fact that this man can sing literally anything and still sound amazing.
Teaming up again with Trond Holter (ex-Wig Wam) who he has previously worked with on Jorn’s 2013 album ‘Traveller’ and the outstanding ‘Dracula, Swing Of Death’ record. Also along for this ride is the man of the hour in the melodic rock world, the phenomenal Alessandro Del Vecchio (Hardline, Edge Of Forever and pretty much every other release in melodic rock in recent memory). These men, along with a group of other incredible musicians, make up the artists responsible for the fantastic sound this record has. A group of very talented artists to be sure.
Songs like the excellent cover of Foreigner’s ‘Rev On The Red Line’, Dio’s ‘Rainbow In The Dark’ and Journey’s ‘Don’t Stop Believing’ are all 100% Jorn without a doubt and somehow he has managed to make them all his own yet still he stays true to the originals and does not lose any of the magic that made all of these songs hits for their original artists.
I personally would have preferred a different song in place of ‘The Final Frontier’ being that I am not much of a Maiden fan but Jorn still sounds excellent on the track as usual. One I wish had been included is Deep Purple’s ‘Mistreated’. I have seen him perform this live and he does a masterful job with the song.
While there are many tracks included here that may raise an eyebrow to most metalheads, it is an album that is most definitely worth the money to purchase and will not be a disappointment as it is undeniably still a Jorn album and still a hard rocking melodic metal album with outstanding musicians and the unmistakable voice of Lande leading the charge through the 12 hard rocking tracks.
Yet again Jorn has given us an offering of songs featuring his beast of a voice and delivers some his best covers to date. Don’t miss out on this one.
