Ex-Wig Wam frontman Age Sten Nilsen and Eclipse frontman Erik Mårtensson teamed up last year to give us one hell of a great record with some excellent songs with huge hooks, an incredible voice and fantastic musicians.
A far cry from Nilsen’s solo work and not quite as Glam as his work with Wig Wam but very similar to their sound, ‘Shanghaied’ gives us a batch of songs that the charismatic Age delivers the way only he can. Full of his signature vocals and obvious love and passion for what he does, this is the perfect album for those who have missed the music of Wig Wam.
With most of the tracks being co-written by Nilsen and Mårtensson the songs have a fantastic mix to them of both the Wig Wam style of fun, glam infused songs with huge hooks and the typical Mårtensson sound of big, bombastic melodies, and it works fantastic together as is evidenced on every track they penned together.
The album starts with a bang with the hard and heavy ‘Silverback’ and doesn’t let up until track five where we get the slowest song of the album, the excellent ‘Road To Babylon’. After that it cranks right back up with ‘Take Out The Enemy (Hallelujah)’ and again, does not let up before we reach the end.
From the opening track to the raunchy and funny title track to the catchy as hell chorus of my personal favorite, ‘Wild Card’, to the final notes of the album, we are given 12 tracks of pure kick ass rock ‘n’ roll the Age Sten Nilsen way, and it is awesome.
Nilsen’s first two albums with Wig Wam are spectacular and contain some truly outstanding songs and I still listen to both of those albums regularly, but I dare say this is the strongest album as a whole that he has ever delivered as there is really not a weak track in the lot in my opinion.
Erik produces here with Age as executive producer and they did an excellent job on the record, everything sounds great. The band is outstanding and sound terrific and with the group of talented artists they got for the record then we would expect nothing less.
A must have record for any fan of Nilsen, Mårtensson or Wig Wam. It’s big, it’s loud, it’s fun and it is fantastic. A great addition to any music library for fans of glam infused melodic rock.
