Guitar virtuoso Magnus Karlsson (Primal Fear, Last Tribe) returned with his second Free Fall offering at the end of last year. Free Fall is the title of Karlsson’s solo work outside of his current band duties in German metal band Primal Fear.
Karlsson is a man of considerable talent and he proves here again what we all already knew, that he knows how to write some damn fine music on top of his incredible guitar abilities.
Once again Karlsson has gathered a who’s who of melodic rock singers for this record, some new and some returning. New comers to the Free Fall family include Jorn Lande (ex-Masterplan, Allen/Lande), Jakob Samuel (The Poodles), Harry Hess (Harem Scarem, First Signal), Joe Lynn Turner (Sunstorm, ex-Rainbow), Rebecca De La Motte and Tony Martin (ex-Black Sabbath).
Returning again from the first record are Tony Harnell (TNT), David Readman (Pink Cream 69), Rick Altzi (At Vance, ex-Masterplan) and of course the man himself, Karlsson.
Also along for the ride, and doing a terrific job on drums, is Karlsson’s frequent band mate Jaime Salazar (Last Tribe, Allen/Lande). Salazar is new to this record and takes his position behind the drumset, a seat previously held by Daniel Flores (Find Me, The Murder Of My Sweet) on the first record.
The songs are a mix just like with the first album. Magnus has an amazing ability to write songs that all have his own sound to them but also all sound like a song you would find on any of the given vocalists albums. Songs like the title track sung by the mighty Jorn Lande has an obvious Allen/Lande sound to it, not surprisingly. ‘Out Of The Dark‘ featuring Jakob Samuel has a Poodles vibe to it while the Joe Lynn Turner sung ‘No Control‘ has a definite Sunstorm feel to it. And the list goes on.
With each track being written for, and tailored to, the particular vocalist involved, Karlsson succeeds and has yet again managed to deliver an album that has a wide range of singers and styles to it all the while fitting it all together nicely so it flows as one record should.
Once again I am amazed at Magnus’s vocal abilities. The man can flat out sing but seems content to stay in the background behind other singers and just work his magic on the guitars. But take one listen to the songs that he sings himself and you will see that he is fully capable of carrying an album with him on vocals alone.
Whatever his reasoning is for not doing so is a mystery to me but also a moot point as he is content in his role as guitarist and writer and he has once again delivered a very strong and solid album with some of the finest voices in the business alongside his blazing guitars and terrific melodies.
Fans of the first Free Fall album, any of the names involved and hard hitting melodic rock in general will likely find this release to be a winner as well.
