Somewhere around the Fall of 2017 I was browsing online when I ran across a suggested video for me on my YouTube page by a new band called Beast In Black. Always interested in discovering new music I clicked on a song called ‘Blind And Frozen’ and was immediately captured by the driving beat and, a mere 18 seconds in, the incredible voice and range of vocalist Yannis Papadopoulis (and damn can that guy sing!). The song grabbed me instantly and I pre-ordered a copy right away based on the one song. A very rare thing for me to do.
Now while I do like some power metal I am not a huge fan of it and it is not a genre that I actively seek out and listen to religiously, but I do enjoy some and I was actually familiar with Yannis from his earlier work with Wardrum, though I did not realize it was him upon my first listen to the song. I did, however, immediately recognize the guitarist of the band, Anton Kabanen.
I recalled hearing some murmurings that Anton had something new in the works following his exit from fellow Finnish metal band Battle Beast, but I did not pursue it to find out what project it may be so when I saw him playing in the music video I was excited. I have always been a fan of his and he can shred the hell out of a guitar, something you hear all throughout this album.
I was familiar with fellow band members Kasperi Heikkinen (ex-Amberian Dawn, ex-U.D.O.) and Máté Molnár (Wisdom) and already knew what these guys could bring to the table, but I was unfamiliar with drummer Sami Hänninen (ex-Brymir, ex-Spirit Disease) before hearing this album, but the man more than holds his own and proves he knows his way around the kit.
Each member of this band are exceptional musicians and together they delivered what just may be one of the most perfect power metal albums ever for me.
‘Beast In Black’ starts things off in a high energy, balls to the wall, double bass drum head banger that leads into the aforementioned ‘Blind And Frozen’, most definitely a standout.
Next up is ‘Blood Of A Lion’, another very solid track and it takes us into another of my favorites in ‘Born Again’. This was, I believe, the second single released and it is another smashing track and one of the best present in my opinion.
‘Zodd The Immortal’ and ‘The Fifth Angel’ carry on the same pacing of the first four tracks and lead into ‘Crazy, Mad, Insane’ a track that has what I would consider to be a great intro for a show opener for the band. A very catchy tune.
‘Hell For All Eternity’ is the first of two bonus tracks on the Japanese import edition of the album and, unlike most albums with bonus tracks, these come in the middle of other tracks instead of the end of the record. A fine song that leads to ‘Eternal Fire’ and then into ‘Go To Hell’, the second of the bonus tracks on the import and, in my opinion, the best of the two. In fact, this is one of my favorite songs of the record. A hard rocking metal anthem with a terrific vocal delivery.
‘End Of The World’ is a smashing rocker with a terrific melody that takes us to the album closer and the one and only ballad of the record, ‘Ghost In The Rain’, and what a ballad it is! One of the best vocals of the album and a wonderful closer for the record. Just an excellent track that I love! Easily one of the best of the album.
And that is the album. If you like what you hear then I would say it is definitely worth it to seek out the import edition so that you get the two bonus tracks.
Everything about this album just works. From the out of this World vocals to the guitars, bass and drums to the songwriting and production, there is not a single thing I dislike about it.
While it is fairly rare for me to really like a full album of power metal, it is extremely rare for me to love one, but that is exactly how I am about this record. I love every second of it. This has got to be one of, if not the, catchiest full on power metal albums that I have heard in years, if ever. Every single track will grab you, get into your head, latch on and never let go. Just a smashing album beginning to end without a single moment of filler material.
While I am very late in getting this reviewed and posted, the album was Melodic Music Reviews’ number 1 metal album of 2017.
If you are a fan of bands like Battle Beast or just a fan of amazing power metal then get this one right away!
